When I saw people selling everything they owned, their seating, their beds, their televisions and dining set on ebay in order to have money to pay for treatment for their autistic children, it was a sad commentary on life in America when other civilized nations have a national healthcare program.

Then, the day I walked into therapy with the two-year-old grandson we are raising and was told cuts back would mean his one hour a week treatment session, had become 45 minutes a week and would soon become a half hour, it broke my heart.

The next week, we were told that the two playgroups that meet for two hours each, one group on Thursday the other on Friday, would be combined into one group of Friday only and one of the therapists had been layed off because of hospital budget cutbacks.

The next week, were told when the playgroup ended for the school year on May 7, 2009, it would be the last playgroup for autistic children, it was being shut down. This left families with autistic children ages 2-3 in the Early Intervention Program a half hour of treatment each week. That is when I got mad.

My grandson would have gone on to the school district's pre-school for ages three and up by then. But, what about the other autistic children ages 2-3? They were out of luck, and luck had not been on their side since birth.

I knew right then, that raising this little boy was not my single calling, there were others who needed help, desperately. That day the Americans For Autistic American Children program was born.

It is my intent, through extensive outreach across this country to bring some spare money into the lives of those with autistic children that don't have quite enough. If you know somebody struggling, let them know about the AFAAC grant.

We are not a 401(C) not-for-profit. We are just a family who cares.
